Sir Fleming was a British bacteriologist and the discoverer of Penicillin. Fleming observed a mould growing on one of his bacterial cultures and found out that this mould was killing or preventing the growth of the bacteria. The substance produced by this mould Penicillium notatum was called penicillin. But it took ten more years for Howard Florey and Ernst Chain to isolate penicillin. All three shared the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945. Sir Fleming was also the discoverer of lysozyme which is found in human tears.

He can be described as one of the first modern scientist who combined both theory and practical work to aid his scientific research. He is credited with many discoveries in the fields of astronomy, physics and mathematics. He initially started studying medicine when he discovered the law of pendulum. He also put forward the law of falling bodies. He was one of the first astronomer to use telescope and he invented far better ones than those existed.
